Make sure you get down at 9:30pm to see the amazing talents of, Kim Kelaart on hammond organ, Gillian Norman-Funk Gregory Jr. on guitar and Leigh Fischer on Drums. With a rotating guest singer every week, it's bound to be a ripper! First featured vocalists, Mimi Zaetta-Thomas, followed by Lauren Ajlus, Chantal Christina Mitvalsky, then Walter Saluni, each respective week. Born in Chicago in 1949, Gil Scott-Heron was a deeply influential musician and socio-political commentator. With more than 15 albums to his name, his politically charged pieces illuminate, transcend and push genre definition. Known as the ‘father of hip hop’ his music moved seamlessly through jazz, soul and blues in his 30 year career.
This premier concert, curated for the festival, features performances of his work by some of Australia’s finest soul and jazz acts including Vince Jones, Ryan Ritchie (The Raah Project), Hue Blanes, Hailey Cramer, N’fa Jones and Walter Saluni. Expect spoken word, soulful re-imaginings of familiar songs and lesser known tracks from Heron’s catalogue. A band created for this special occasion will feature members of The Putbacks, ATM15 and The Meltdown. One night only.
